Gold Rush: How Maturing Bank Certificates are Supercharging Egypt's Gold Market

Maturing Bank Certificates Put Funds into Egypt’s Gold Market, Driving Local Demand

July 31, 2026 | Daily News Egypt

A report by Gold Bullion shows more funds in Egypt’s gold market. Bank certificates with high yields have matured. New cash now flows into gold in early 2026. This change comes with seasonal buying and political strain on money and goods.

Local Gold Market Sees Price Rise with More Demand

Gold in Egypt went up around 3% in the past week. The cost for 21-karat gold rose by EGP 175 per gram. The week started at EGP 5,805 and closed at EGP 5,980. At one point, the price reached EGP 6,010 per gram. Technical data shows gold pushed past a barrier at EGP 5,900 after holding steady above EGP 5,800. The price did not maintain its gain near EGP 6,000 but now stays in a positive range for 2026. The price is about EGP 150 per gram higher—roughly 2.5% more. Earlier, sharp falls came with political issues. Those issues hurt both world and local gold prices.

Currency Weakness and Political Instability Boost Gold Demand

Global gold prices fell about 6.2% since early 2026. That drop equals nearly $274 per ounce. Yet, Egypt’s market kept its strength. Gold Bullion ties this strength to the lower Egyptian pound. Last week, the US dollar grew about 1.6% against the pound. The exchange rate ended at EGP 51.40. Since early July, this shift pushed gold prices up by 4.3%.

The weakening pound comes with rising political tension around the Iran conflict. These troubles raised investor worries and sent money out of Egypt. Over two weeks, nearly $1.92 billion left the debt market. Local investors now hold gold as a safe bet.

Bank Savings Certificates Shift Cash to Gold

The report notes that many bank certificates have reached maturity. This shift moved funds from bank deposits into gold. A new trust in gold as a saving tool has grown. Local buyers see gold as a store of value. Changing exchange rates and political risks make gold more attractive.

The gap between gold’s market price and its fair value widened. Summer holidays and more buyers returning from trips also push local buying higher.

Egypt’s Gold Imports Soar

Imports of gold in Egypt climbed in early 2026. Data shows imports reached $4.05 billion. Last year, imports totaled $249.6 million in the same period. Gold now makes up 8.4% of all non-oil imports. This surge shows strong local buying for both use and recycling. Local prices still follow global gold trends and money shifts.

Global Gold Trends Amid Political Strain and High Oil Prices

World gold prices had a weekly gain after two weeks of loss. Spot gold climbed from $3,995 per ounce to a top of $4,166 and then settled near $4,052 per ounce. Gold briefly passed a barrier from $4,080 to $4,100 per ounce before losing its edge. It finished a bit above $4,000 per ounce.

One factor was an 11% jump in crude oil prices, pushing barrels above $100. This rise came as military tensions grew between the United States and Iran. A busy sea lane, the Hormuz Strait, closed; about 20% of world energy passes through it.

High oil prices spur fears of rising costs. Experts expect interest rates to stay high for longer. The market now sees two US rate hikes in 2026. The chances for a rate rise at the Fed’s September meet are above 80%.

The US dollar reached its highest level in three weeks with a 0.7% gain. US Treasury yields hit highs not seen in 18 months. In normal settings, these would lower gold buying. Yet, safe-haven interest from political strain keeps gold in demand.

Gold Bullion’s study shows how simple ties among local cash moves, money rules, and global conflict shape Egypt’s gold market in 2026. Maturing bank certificates have freed cash that people now use to buy gold. Consumers trust gold as a way to save when times are tough.
